MLK Jr. Day news you won't see anywhere else:
NIH HAS A DREAM (ABOUT THEIR STAFF CAFETERIA)
(Nikki did the reporting for this expose, so all credit goes to her.)
So our government's preeminent institution dedicated to the advancement of science apparently decided to promote the advancement of racial stereotypes yesterday by celebrating MLK Jr. Day with fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, and collard greens in the cafeteria yesterday.
I can't really throw stones in that a) I love macaroni and CHEESE and b) I celebrated Dr. King's commitment to social justice and equality by purchasing a bottle of Bacardi Melon from the clearance bin at Calvert-Woodley.
While Nikki was quick to call my out on my hypocrisy re: the relationship between watermelon, fried chicken, church picnics, etc., Laurie was much more understanding:
SnackManiac: I just wanted to let you know that I commemorated MLK day by buying watermelon Bacardi.
Laurie: That is what he would have wanted.

great blog! timely in fact because i just saw this tv commercial for boston market with this hot new slogan, to wit, "Meal Accomplished." Obviously THAT is how you market a chicken ("Chicken Accomplished" would be more than we could possibly handle). since i haven't seen tv in a while i wasn't sure if this was something everyone was already aware of though you'd expect it to take off like "i am loving it." So i looked on bostonmarket.com and can't find any mention of the thing. now, I am wondering if I just fantasized this killer catchphrase or what. is this the sort of question snackmaniac can answer? Does snackmaniac answer questions?
I actually think NIH stole their idea from the Washington and Lee University Letitia Pate Dining Hall - I feasted like that on MLK day for 4 years. But I just checked out the menu online from this Monday, and I guess someone finally called W&L on their blatant stereotype, because students ate scallops for dinner that night. But in trying to remember the menu with my friend Matt we had this discussion:
me: hey remember at W&L when on MLK day they made the most racist food...
what was the menu?
Matt: fried chicken, collard greens, and watermelon or something, it was just absurd
me: were there black eyed peas
Matt: maybe black eyed peas
HELLO COMMENTERS!!
I just knew that this story would provoke some intense debate about the direction in which our country is headed.
While my final research report on the Boston Market issue is still pending release, I did want to let you know that, as of 2006, Boston Market's official tagline is "Time For Something Good." Both tantalizing and ominous, eh?
